The New Zealand Law Society is a statutory body set up under the Law Practitioners Act 1982. Its members comprise all lawyers holding a current practising certificate, which they obtain annually from their local district law society. For further information about the New Zealand Law Society and its structure, click here.

Various people are able to comment on behalf of the New Zealand Law Society including the President, Executive Director, other elected officers and the conveners and members of the society's various specialist committees, ad hoc committees and sections. Click here for a list of these people.

Media representatives wanting comment on issues or information should, in the first instance, contact:

Sue Ewart
Director of Communications
Tel: (04) 463 2980
Fax: (04) 463 2985
Email: sue.ewart@lawyers.org.nz

who will be able to direct you to the person most likely to be able to assist.

Complaints about lawyers
Complaints about lawyers must be made to the lawyer's district law society. That district law society may resolve the complaint itself or may refer it to the New Zealand Law Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal.

Inquiries as to whether a complaint has been laid should therefore be directed in the first instance to the district law society. Click here for contact details of district law societies and the areas they cover.

Media Releases

Submissions
The NZLS makes submissions on most Bills before Parliament and on other matters of law reform, such as those being addressed by the NZ Law Commission. Click here for more detail about our submissions.
